The Mevlana Museum in which the tomb of Mevlana Çeladdiin-i Rumi Rumî (1207-1273), known to his followers as Mevlana (or Rumî), a Sufi Muslim poet and mystic and one of the great spiritual thinkers and teachers of all time is located in Konya. Konya was the capital of the Seljuk Turkish Sultanate of Rum (Rome) which flourished in Central Anatolia from 1071 to 1275.

The Seljuk architecture in Konya is outstanding - the numerous great Seljuk buildings, mosques and theological seminaries are Konya's pride and joy. The Selimiye Mosque was built on the orders of the Sultan Selim II in 1567 is from the great period of Ottoman architecture. Selimiye Mosque is located right next to the Mevlana Museum in the center of Konya.

Çatalhöyük is 45 kilometers or 28 miles southeast of Konya. This archaeolgical site holds the remains of a Neolithic settlement believed to be among the worlds oldest human communities at 9500 years old. The Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük was first discovered in the late 1950s and excavated by James Mellaart between 1961 and 1965. Since 1993 an international team of archaeologists, led by Ian Hodder, has been carrying out new excavations and research in order to shed more light on the people that inhabited the site.
